Tip of the Week De-Mystifying
the Competent Leadership Manual Part 2 (2/10/09) Last
week I mentioned how the Competent Leadership manual helped Art improve
his skills and keep his job. This week, Id like to focus on points to get
through the manual efficiently and in a way that will benefit you the most. Skim
through the manual once. You dont need to read every single page as you
are doing thisjust skim to get a general idea of how to work through the
manual. Bring your CL manual with you every week,
even if you are not an assigned functionary. We frequently need to recruit someone
to fill in at the last minute and if you have your CL manual, you wont lose
any credit. Read through the appropriate project
prior to the start of the meeting. If there is a specific area where you would
like to improve, highlight key words or phrases. For example, I would like to
improve in the area of providing feedback (project 3). Items I have highlighted
include Be specific, Explain the behaviors effect,
and Ask for a change in behavior. Read
the questions your evaluator will be answering. Occasionally, there will be something
you hadnt thought of before that you need to address during your assignment.
For example, project #1s Table Topics Speaker, the evaluator is asked how
well you were able to assimilate the idea into your response. Considering this
question might help you to avoid tangents or skirting the question. Pass
your manual to another member before the meeting starts. It is very difficult
to answer the questions retroactively. Pay close
attention to the project requirements. Not every project requires you to complete
every assignment. Some only require one assignment be completed, others two or
three. To help you with this, download the tracking
sheet, print it out, and keep it tucked in your CL manual or attached to the
inside cover for quick reference. Finally, dont
forget to read the feedback from your evaluator.
