Functionary Roles

Part of becoming a Toastmaster is about practicing and honing your leadership skills. At each meeting, club members take on important functionary roles of the meeting. Each role provides an opportunity to speak in front of the club and to lead portions of the meeting.

Functionary Role

Toastmaster
Contact Topicmaster to discuss duties; contact speakers for information on speech; contact General Evaluator to discuss duties; prepare remarks relevant to theme of evening
Preside over meeting; lead applause; introduce meeting participants; limit comments; call for Timer’s report and vote for Best Speaker
Topicmaster
Prepare questions for Tabletopics relevant to theme of evening; take note of members without functions for the evening
State purpose of Tabletopics session; limit comments; call upon members without functions for Tabletopics questions; Invite guest participation; watch time; call for Timer’s report and vote for best Tabletopics
Speaker
Prepare speech; rehearse speech; be in touch with evaluator; prepare introduction for Toastmaster
Present speech.
General Evaluator
Contact evaluators and other functionaries to discuss duties
Introduce evaluators; call for Timer’s report and vote for Best Evaluator; call for Functionary reports; present awards (select Functionary Excellence & Vicki Treciak Spirit Award recipients); give general evaluation of meeting.
Wordmaster
Select word to use for vocabulary building; print word on paper for display at meeting
Introduce word, meaning, and cite example; listen for use of word throughout meeting; report on use of word
Grammarian
Prepare brief explanation of duties
Explain duties; listen for good and bad usage of English language; report on good and bad usage of English language & each evening’s grammar focus within 2-3 timed minutes
Ah Counter
Prepare brief explanation of duties
Explain duties; listen for ah’s, um’s, inappropriate pauses, and other fillers; report on use of fillers
Timer
Confirm speech times; prepare brief explanation of duties
Time speeches, evaluations, tabletopics, and other timed sessions; report on times; also time Grammarian’s report at 2-3 minutes

Present Joke
